The Compass ELA Vision

Grounded in the Active View of Reading, Compass ELA is designed to help educators better understand how students make meaning from text. The assessment combines multiple sources of evidence to provide a clearer picture of student thinking while remaining fully compatible with ELA HQIM.

  • 30 minute assessment: Less than a class period to gather meaningful evidence connected to current instruction.

  • Select Response Items: Purposefully designed questions identify patterns in student understanding and potential language comprehension strengths and needs.

  • Short Answer Questions: Student explanations provide richer insight into reasoning, interpretation, and meaning-making.
